I’ve been in education for 21 years, all but one in the same district, a few years as a second-grade teacher, middle school reading teacher, and principal. I have witnessed a variety of events over the course of those years that make me proud to be in education. Living in a small community and working in a small school district, has so many benefits. One in particular is the way people come together to make a difference in the lives of our youth.

This proved truer than ever last spring. Our guidance counselor and high school English teacher approached me about a new program dedicated to redefining the culture within our school walls. As a new principal but also born and raised in the same school district where I have taught and am now the principal, I was so excited to be a part of implementing this program.

Little did I know just how impactful this whole experience would be. Tim came out to our district and brought our staff together before the school year began. It was one of the best in-service days I have been a part of for years. The school year began and again, Tim came out to begin the Networks of Support experience with our students. By the end of the day, I was in tears. Watching our students interact with each other and grow together was magical, an experience that is nearly indescribable.

Our Raiders Connect days are inspiring. Students that would not usually take on a leadership role, are stepping up and out of their comfort zones. High school mentors are high fiving underclassmen as they walk down the hallways, supporting each other in extracurricular activities, and making a difference in each other’s lives every single day.

To say I’m a believer in this approach is an understatement. In the few short months that we’ve implemented these activities, our school culture has taken a turn in a positive direction. We have a way to go, but because of this support, our students and staff are more connected than ever before.

Outcomes:

Groups became increasingly unified, exhibiting a shared commitment to healthy norms, and actively encouraged peers in help-seeking behaviors, fostering a supportive environment where every member feels valued and understood.
Social Network Health's interactive training fostered an even more dynamic relationship network. Within these groups, vulnerable members can draw strength from adaptive members, leading to more changes in who they identify as valued connections.
Schools have reported significant improvements in various metrics, including increased daily attendance, higher graduation rates, enhanced identification of Trusted Adults, greater willingness to seek help, and improved connectedness among students and staff. Additionally, school disciplinary issues have notably declined, reflecting the program's positive impact on the school climate and student well-being.
